My First Snorkeling Trip"

Puerto Galera is a coastal town located on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. Its name means "Port of Galleons" in Spanish, a nod to its history as a trading hub for Spanish galleons during the colonial period. The town has a rich history that dates back to pre-colonial times and has been shaped by a variety of cultural influences.

 Pre-Colonial Period: 

The area that is now Puerto Galera was originally inhabited by the Mangyan people, an indigenous group that still resides on the island of Mindoro today. The Mangyan people were skilled farmers and fishermen who lived in small, scattered communities throughout the island. They had their own language and culture, and their way of life remained relatively unchanged until the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century.

Spanish Colonial Period: 

 In 1570, the Spanish arrived in the Philippines and began colonizing the islands. The Spanish established a trading post in Manila and began exploring the surrounding areas. They soon discovered Puerto Galera, which was strategically located along the coast and had a deep, sheltered bay that was perfect for anchoring their ships. The Spanish named the area Puerto Galera, which means "Port of Galleons" in Spanish, and began using it as a trading hub for their galleons, which were large, heavily armed sailing ships that transported goods between Spain and its colonies in Asia and the Americas. The galleons brought spices, textiles, and other valuable goods to the Philippines, which were then traded for Chinese silk and porcelain. During this time, Puerto Galera became an important center for trade and commerce, attracting merchants from China, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The town grew rapidly and soon became a bustling port city with a diverse population of traders, sailors, and artisans. 

 American Colonial Period:

 In 1898, the Spanish-American War ended with the defeat of Spain, and the Philippines became a colony of the United States. The Americans brought with them new ideas and technologies, and Puerto Galera began to modernize. The town's infrastructure improved, with the construction of roads and bridges that connected it to other parts of the island. The Americans also introduced new crops such as coffee and coconut, which became important sources of income for local farmers. 

 World War II: 

 During World War II, the Philippines was occupied by Japanese forces, and Puerto Galera was no exception. The town was heavily bombed by the Japanese, and many of its buildings were destroyed. After the war, Puerto Galera began to rebuild. The town's fishing industry grew, and it became a popular destination for Filipino tourists seeking a beach getaway. In the 1960s, the first foreign tourists began to arrive, drawn by the town's beautiful beaches and clear waters. 

 Modern Day: 

 Today, Puerto Galera is a popular tourist destination that attracts visitors from all over the world. Its beautiful beaches, vibrant marine life, and variety of water sports make it an ideal destination for snorkeling, scuba diving, and island hopping. Despite its popularity, Puerto Galera has managed to retain its small-town charm. The town is still home to a large number of fishermen and farmers, and many of its residents still speak the Mangyan language. 

 In recent years, Puerto Galera has faced some challenges, including environmental degradation caused by overfishing and pollution. The local government has taken steps to address these issues, including implementing a marine sanctuary program and promoting sustainable tourism practices. 

 Overall, Puerto Galera's rich history and cultural heritage have played an important role in shaping its identity as a vibrant and welcoming town that offers visitors a unique glimpse into the Philippines' past and present.

Puerto Galera offers a variety of Filipino and international cuisine, with seafood being a popular choice due to its location. Some popular dishes include sinigang (a sour soup), adobo (a meat dish marinated in vinegar and soy sauce), and lechon (roasted pork). There are also plenty of street food options, such as grilled squid, fish balls, and pork skewers.

Puerto Galera is known for its water sports activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, and island hopping. There are several dive sites that offer the opportunity to see a diverse range of marine life including turtles, sharks, and colorful corals. Beach hopping is also a popular activity, with some of the best beaches being White Beach, Sabang Beach, and Talipanan Beach. Other activities include hiking, zip-lining, and visiting local markets.

Directions from Manila: Puerto Galera is approximately 130 km south of Manila. The easiest way to get there is by taking a ferry from the Batangas Port to Puerto Galera. The ferry ride takes approximately 1-2 hours, depending on the type of ferry. From the port, you can take a tricycle or jeepney to your accommodation. Alternatively, you can hire a private car or take a bus to Batangas Port.

One of my most memorable experiences was when I went to Puerto Galera with my friends, captain Talania and  Lieutenant. Cueto. Even though I just went along with them, the place was truly amazing. It was my first time to go snorkeling, and even though I don't know how to swim, I still tried to go snorkeling. It was such a great feeling to be able to do something that I thought I couldn't.I was fortunate enough to have the chance to visit this place with my friends.

On our first day in Puerto Galera, we went to a beach resort where we had our accommodation. The resort was located right in front of the beach, so we had a great view of the sea. We spent the day lounging on the beach and enjoying the warm sunshine.

The next day, we decided to go snorkeling. I was hesitant at first because I don't know how to swim, but my friends encouraged me to give it a try. We rented snorkeling gear and boarded a boat that would take us to a nearby snorkeling spot.

When we arrived at the spot, I put on my snorkeling gear and dipped my head into the water. It was such a breathtaking experience to see the underwater world for the first time. The water was so clear that I could see the colorful fishes and corals that were living underneath.

I was amazed by the beauty of the sea creatures that I saw, and I couldn't believe that I was able to experience this. I felt so grateful to have this opportunity to explore the ocean and its wonders.

After snorkeling, we went to another beach where we had our lunch. We enjoyed the fresh seafood and the beautiful scenery around us. We also took some time to take photos and capture the memories of our trip.

In the evening, we went to a night market where we bought souvenirs and tried some local delicacies. We also watched a cultural show that showcased the traditional dances and music of the Philippines.

The following day, we went island hopping and visited some of the nearby islands. We swam in the cool waters, walked on the white sandy beaches, and explored the hidden coves and rock formations. It was another amazing day filled with adventure and fun.

On our last day in Puerto Galera, we just relaxed and enjoyed the beach. We savored the moment and appreciated the beauty of the place. We also talked about our experiences and how grateful we were to have shared this trip together.

Overall, my experience in Puerto Galera was truly unforgettable. It was a great reminder that life is full of surprises and adventures, and that we should never be afraid to try something new. I will always cherish the memories of this trip, and I hope to visit Puerto Galera again in the future.
